Walking is the easiest exercise you can do to help maintain your independence.
Regular exercise can help boost energy, help with balance and help you maintain your independence. Exercise can even reverse some of the symptoms of aging. Even if you’ve never exercised before adding movement and activity to your life, even in small ways, will help.
You are never too old to start!
Start by walking. If you have a problem with balance use a cane or stick to help you in the beginning.
Begin with short walks and increase the time as you feel more secure. You can also increase the speed you are walking as your legs and body get more use to the exercise. Moving your arms as you walk will help those muscles. In time you could carry weights in your hands as you walk.
Mobility is essential for your independence as you age. You can take steps now to make sure you can easily walk in the years ahead.
